Takano Leads 96 Members of Congress in Requesting Meeting with the Department of Education on Illegal Plans to Dismantle Department
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Mark Takano (CA-39), a former public school teacher and now a Senior Member of the Committee on Education & the Workforce, led 96 Members of Congress in writing to Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, Denise Carter, requesting an urgent meeting regarding the Trump Administration’s reported effort to illegally dismantle the Department without Congressional action. The text reads as follows:
As Members of Congress, we are requesting an urgent meeting this week with you regarding the Trump Administration’s reported effort to dismantle the Department of Education (the Department).
We are deeply concerned by numerous credible public reports that the Trump Administration has plans to illegally dismantle or drastically reduce the Department through Executive Order.
As Members vested with oversight power, we demand a discussion of what such a reduction of the Department would entail, including which programs would be cut, which would be moved into the jurisdiction of other agencies, and the projected impact of those changes on Americans across the country.
We request a response within 24 hours to this urgent inquiry.
The letter comes on the heels of the Trump Administration’s efforts to illegally dismantle or drastically reduce multiple federal agencies without Congressional action. Such a move against the Department of Education would be a direct attack on the American Constitutional system and an attack on America’s public schools.
